Bubble wrap rolls provide flexible cushioning for fragile, sensitive and finished products during packing, storage and transportation. The air-filled bubbles help absorb ordinary impact, separate products and reduce direct contact between merchandise and the walls of a shipping box.

Small 3/16-inch bubble conforms closely to the shape of the product. It works well for delicate surfaces, small items and products that require multiple protective layers without excessive bulk.

Medium 5/16-inch bubble is a versatile choice for many commercial products. It provides more cushioning depth than small bubble while remaining flexible enough to wrap moderate-size merchandise.

How to Wrap a Product with Bubble Wrap

1. Select the bubble size according to product fragility and dimensions.
2. Measure enough material to wrap the product completely.
3. Cover sharp edges or corners before wrapping.
4. Place the bubble side toward the product for general cushioning.
5. Wrap the item with sufficient overlap.
6. Add extra layers around corners and fragile areas.
7. Secure the wrap with tape without attaching tape directly to delicate surfaces.
8. Place the wrapped product inside a properly sized box.
9. Fill remaining spaces to prevent movement.
10. Seal and label the carton correctly.

Should the Bubbles Face In or Out?

For most ordinary packaging applications, the bubble side is placed toward the product so the air-filled cells cushion the surface directly.

Products with highly sensitive, polished or easily marked surfaces may first require tissue, foam or another smooth protective layer. Bubble impressions can sometimes appear on delicate finishes during prolonged pressure.

The flat side normally remains outside, creating a smoother surface for tape and handling.

How Much Bubble Wrap Should Be Used?

There is no universal number of layers for every product. The correct amount depends on product weight, fragility, shape, carton size and expected handling.

Small durable products may need one or two layers, while glass, ceramics, electronics and valuable merchandise may require several layers plus additional cushioning inside the box.

After packing, gently move the carton. The product should not shift freely inside the box.

Using Bubble Wrap as Void Fill

Bubble wrap can fill empty spaces between the wrapped product and the carton walls. Large 1/2-inch bubble generally fills open space more efficiently than small bubble.

Do not rely on a few loose pieces that can move away from the product. Fill spaces evenly so the item remains centered and separated from the box walls.

Air pillows, kraft paper and foam can also be used depending on the product weight and packaging requirements.

Using Bubble Wrap for Moving

Wrap dishes, glassware, electronics, mirrors, picture frames and decorative items individually. Place heavier products at the bottom of moving boxes and lighter items above them.

Use packing paper or corrugated dividers between fragile pieces. Empty spaces should be filled so the contents do not move during transportation.

Label fragile cartons on the top and multiple sides.

Using Bubble Wrap for Electronics

Bubble wrap can protect completed electronics from scratches and impact, but ordinary clear bubble wrap should not automatically be considered anti-static.

Exposed circuit boards, memory components and electrostatic-sensitive products may require anti-static bubble, static-shielding bags or other specialized packaging.

Protect screens with a smooth foam or non-abrasive layer before adding bubble wrap.
